The screen stays black and the Model 3 will not shift into Drive after you press the brake. In Orange County that usually traces to a missing key, a sleeping computer, or a flat 12V, not a ruined high-voltage pack. Work Tesla’s start steps first, then stop before you clamp anything the owner’s manual does not show.

What won’t start usually means on a Model 3

A Model 3 does not have a start button or a key cylinder. Tesla’s published start is sit down, present a valid key, press the brake, then select Drive or Reverse. When a Tesla Model 3 won’t start, people usually mean one of four things. The car will not unlock. The screen will not wake. The car will not shift. Or it drove yesterday and today it is a brick.

Those are not the same failure. A sleeping cabin computer can look dead for a minute, then come back when you press the brake with the key card on the console. A missing phone key looks the same until you hold the card to the pillar. A flat 12V battery keeps the high-voltage pack from connecting, so the car never wakes even with range still on the traction battery. An empty pack is a different job.

Tesla’s roadside policy answers a depleted battery with transportation, not on-site charging. That transport is paid, not a financially covered service. Running out of charge sits outside Tesla’s warrantable-breakdown transport of up to 500 miles to the nearest Service Center.

Teslas are the default electric car in this county. As of December 31, 2025, Tesla accounted for 138,121 of 210,842 battery-electric vehicles registered in Orange County, 65.51 percent of the BEV fleet, per the California Energy Commission. You see that density in Irvine HOA garages, in all-day Buena Park lots around Beach Boulevard, and in Huntington Beach beach lots after a long afternoon. The U.S. Department of Energy keeps a plain overview of how EVs are put together if you want the system basics.

If the car still has a live screen and just will not go into Drive, work the key and brake steps next. If nothing lights, skip ahead to the 12V check. For a broader order of operations across Tesla models, use the seven-step Orange County checklist. This page stays on the Model 3 wake and start path.

Key card, phone key, and the brake pedal

Tesla’s Model 3 owner’s manual, Starting and Powering Off, is the source. The sequence is a valid key, then the brake, then Drive or Reverse. There is no ignition twist.

Start with the phone key. The Tesla app has to be installed, Bluetooth on, and the phone inside the car. Concrete Irvine HOA structures and deep parking garages eat Bluetooth. A phone left on a charger in the unit will not wake the car in the garage stall. If the phone is dead, the phone key is dead.

Use the key card next. Tesla documents a card reader on the driver’s side door pillar. Hold the card flat against that reader. Tesla also documents placing the card on the center console phone dock. Waving it from a purse in the passenger seat is not the procedure. Keep a card in your wallet even if you live on the phone key. That is the backup Tesla designed.

A key fob, if you bought one, has to be in the cabin. A fob in a metal box, a Faraday sleeve, or the frunk will not count as present.

Then press the brake. Sit in the driver’s seat and press the pedal firmly. The car powers on when a valid key is present and the brake is pressed. Tapping a dark screen first, with no brake, is why a lot of Model 3s look like they are not starting.

Shifter layout depends on year. Earlier Model 3 cars use the steering-column stalk. Later cars select Drive and Reverse on the screen. This page does not reprint year-by-year button maps. Use the Starting pages in the Tesla owner’s manual for your VIN. If a control is not in that manual, it could not be confirmed here.

If the car has some life but the screen is frozen, Tesla publishes a touchscreen restart: hold both steering-wheel scroll buttons until the display goes black, then wait for it to reboot. That is a screen reset, not a 12V jump. If the display never comes back, treat it as a low-voltage problem.

Walk that loop once. Card on the pillar. Card on the console. Phone Bluetooth. Brake. Then the scroll-button reset. If you still have a dark car, you are out of the start procedure and into 12V territory.

12V sleep versus a truly empty pack

Sleep is the car ignoring you for a minute. A dead 12V is the car staying dark. An empty pack is a traction battery at zero. Mixing those three is how people clamp the wrong thing.

The 12V battery, which Tesla also calls the low-voltage battery, runs the computers, latches, and the contactors that connect the high-voltage pack. When that small battery is down, the traction pack can still hold range and the car still looks dead. That is the usual tesla 12v battery no-start after a long sit in an assigned Irvine stall, or after an all-day Buena Park lot with the car locked and the phone upstairs.

A truly empty pack is the other case. You last saw a low percentage. The car already warned you. You are in a Huntington lot at the end of a beach day, or you sat in inland traffic with the air on. AAA’s 2026 dynamometer study found an 8.5 percent loss of range when running air conditioning at 95 F. Inland Orange County lots run hot. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normal for Anaheim in August is 88.8 F. John Wayne Airport, the west Irvine proxy, is 80.4 F in August. Coastal Huntington is milder. The pack still empties if you parked with little left.

Tesla’s Model Y owner’s manual says that once range is exhausted, the low-voltage battery loses support and needs an external power supply before the high-voltage battery can charge. A matching Model 3 sentence was not confirmed in this site’s claims ledger. Read the Model 3 Running Out of Range and Jump Starting pages for your car. Do not assume the Y text applies word for word.

If the pack is empty, Tesla Roadside Assistance answers with transportation, not on-site charging. Tesla states that when a vehicle has been unplugged for an extended period it can assist, and that this is not a financially covered service. Tesla’s Santa Ana service page publishes 877-798-3752 for roadside.

A matched local operator is a different path. The pros we connect you with can do a Tesla 12V battery jump when the car is asleep with range still on the pack. If the pack itself is empty, Tesla roadside rescue is the referral for a mobile charge. Typical rescue charging in this network is 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of Level 2 charging. That is charging time, not a promise of when someone arrives.

What not to clamp or pry

You can jump start a Tesla. You jump the 12V posts Tesla publishes. You cannot jump the high-voltage pack, and you should not try. Orange cables, underfloor modules, and anything labeled high voltage stay untouched. Never ask a friend to clamp there. Never pry the rear seat or the cabin floor looking for the battery.

Tesla publishes Jump Starting the Low Voltage Battery in the Model 3 owner’s manual. That procedure uses Tesla’s marked low-voltage posts, reached through the front trunk after you follow Tesla’s hood and maintenance-panel steps for your year. This page does not reprint clamp polarity or post photos. Those points change by model year, and a clamp location that is not in Tesla’s current Model 3 manual for your car could not be confirmed here.

Do not treat the 12V accessory outlet in the cabin as a jump post unless Tesla’s manual for that year says it is. It is not a confirmed jump point on this page. Do not clamp to random aluminum in the frunk. Do not roll under the car. Do not cut tape or peel orange loom.

If the front trunk will not open because the car has no power, Tesla documents a manual hood release in the owner’s manual. The exact handle path was not logged in this vertical’s claims file, so it is not described here. Use Tesla’s Opening the Front Trunk with No Power page, or stop and let a matched operator do it.

Portable jump packs show up in Tesla’s procedure as an external low-voltage power supply. That still requires Tesla’s posts and Tesla’s polarity. If you cannot see those posts on the page for your VIN, do not improvise. For model-by-model notes that stay on published Tesla jump paths, read how to jump-start a Tesla by model.

When a matched 12V operator is the next call

Call a matched 12V operator when the key-and-brake loop fails and the screen stays dark. That is the common Irvine HOA garage stall, the Buena Park Beach Boulevard lot after a full workday, and the Huntington Beach lot when the handles will not present.

Charge Pro OC does not jump the car. It is a referral service. It matches you with licensed, independent local operators. Those operators quote and bill you. The brand sets no price and promises no arrival window. The tesla not starting job on a Model 3 is almost always that 12V wake, and the person who should do it is the operator we connect you with.

If you are on a freeway, turn on the hazards. California Vehicle Code 25251 requires flashing the turn signals as warning lights when the vehicle is disabled on the roadway and equipped with a simultaneous-flash device, if that device still works. A genuinely disabled vehicle may temporarily stop on a freeway when another vehicle has been summoned (CVC 21718(a)(4)). After four hours on a freeway right-of-way, a vehicle that cannot move under its own power may be removed (CVC 22651(f)), and sooner if it is a hazard (CVC 22651(b)).

Freeway Service Patrol is free on the published beats. Call 5-1-1 and select Motorist Aid. OCTA lists weekday hours as 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with limited weekend service 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. FSP does not operate overnight or on listed holidays. A jump-start from FSP restores a 12V accessory battery, not a depleted traction pack. FSP has no out-of-charge EV category. The listed FSP outcome for a depleted EV is a free tow to a CHP drop zone, during FSP hours, on patrolled segments, and it is not guaranteed. OCTA’s web page and fact sheet disagree on whether SR-57 and the Express Lanes are in the beat, so confirm on 5-1-1. Published FSP coverage does not list SR-73, SR-133, SR-241, or SR-261.

Off the freeway, in a garage or a beach lot, FSP will not come. That is when you want a matched 12V operator, not a guess with jumper cables.

When to call us

When the Model 3 will not wake after the key card, the phone key, and the brake, you need a person who jumps Tesla 12V systems for a living, not a gas-car clamp on the wrong metal. If you are stuck in Orange County, call us at (949) 444-0151 and we’ll connect you with a local EV rescue operator.
