A Tesla that won’t crank usually needs a 12-volt jump, not a pack charge. This is how to jump start a Tesla Model 3, Y, S, or X. Run that check first in Orange County. The California Energy Commission counted 138,121 Teslas here as of December 31, 2025. That’s 65.51 percent of 210,842 battery-electric cars. A portable pack on the right posts wakes the computers. Then you plug in so the converter can refill that small battery.

Why this 12-volt check matters in Orange County

Orange County holds 12.02 percent of California’s battery-electric cars. It’s only 8.33 percent of the state’s light-duty fleet. Tesla’s local share sits 6.4 percentage points above the state. California’s battery-electric fleet is 61.34 percent Tesla. Orange County’s battery-electric fleet is 65.51 percent Tesla. A 12-volt jump guide isn’t a specialty page here. It’s the car most EV drivers actually park.

Those cars sit for hours in large lots. Irvine’s Supercharger at 1920 Main Street has 40 stalls. Drivers use that garage off the Irvine charging map. Garden Grove’s Harbor Boulevard site has 32 stalls. Anaheim has seven Supercharger addresses, including Lincoln Avenue and Katella Avenue. Cars also sit at Brea Mall, Westminster Mall, and Buena Park’s Beach Boulevard site. A weak 12-volt often dies after a long parked day.

Tesla service sits in Costa Mesa, Buena Park, Santa Ana, Irvine, Anaheim, and Aliso Viejo. A jump can get you to a shop. It doesn’t prove the auxiliary battery is healthy. Slow boots and random warnings are clues you can catch before you’re stuck.

Newer Model 3 and Model Y cars may use a lithium 12-volt. Tesla took 44.7 percent of new Orange County zero-emission sales in 2025. The jump posts stay in the same places. The chemistry only changes how long a jump holds.

Confirm it’s the 12-volt, not the floor pack

Tesla splits the car into two electrical systems. The high-voltage pack under the floor moves the wheels. No consumer jumper can charge that pack. The 12-volt battery powers the computers, handles, lights, and latches. When it dies, the car acts fully dead. The screen stays dark, handles don’t present, and the app may not connect.

Check these signs before you attach a clamp.

  • Dark screen, no app unlock, key card ignored: treat it as 12-volt.
  • Car still locks and unlocks, with a low-range warning: that’s the pack.
  • Dim lights or flickering cabin lights: 12-volt again.

Tesla’s owner’s manual on running out of range is direct. Once the traction pack is exhausted, the low-voltage battery loses support. You need an external power supply before the high-voltage pack can charge. A jump can wake the computers. It still won’t put miles in an empty pack. If you’re not sure which failure you have, use the dead pack versus 12-volt checks.

A jump doesn’t refill the 12-volt like a long drive in a gas car. Tesla’s DC-DC converter charges the 12-volt from the pack. That happens when the car is on, or when it’s plugged in. After the screens come back, plug in. Or keep the car awake so the converter can work.

Use a portable pack, not another Tesla

A small lithium jump starter is the right tool. You don’t need a second running car. You don’t want spikes from an idling gas engine. Keep gloves handy, and keep your key card in reach. You’ll need it once the body computers boot.

Don’t jump one Tesla from another Tesla’s 12-volt posts. Tesla advises against using the car as a donor. You can damage the donor’s electronics. Don’t jump a gas car from your Tesla either. That usually fails, and it can strand you both.

Model 3 and Model Y: start at the bumper

These two share the same roadside approach. The 12-volt itself sits under the frunk floor. Tesla also gives you jump posts behind the front tow-eye cover. Use those posts when the frunk is sealed.

Work the bumper path in this order.

  1. Find the small rectangular cover on the front bumper. It’s on the driver’s side, low. Pry it gently from the notch.
  2. Inside you’ll see a red positive terminal. A chassis ground sits nearby.
  3. Those are your clamps when the hood latch has no power.

If the frunk is already open, go to the battery. Lift the carpet and the foam pad. The positive post has a red cover, and the negative is black. Those terminals work when you can reach them.

Model S and Model X: frunk posts and the wheel-well loops

On older Model S cars before the 2021 refresh, start in the frunk. Model X uses that same front-trunk layout. Lift the floor mat. Pull the foam insert, and the terminals are labeled.

Refreshed Model S and Model X cars from 2021 on moved the jump posts. Look for a red positive post behind a small cover. It’s on the driver’s side of the frunk, near the firewall. The chassis ground is on that same side.

If you’re unsure of the year, use Tesla’s support site and your VIN. Don’t guess from memory in a dark lot.

When the S or X frunk won’t open

A dead 12-volt starves the frunk latch motor. Model 3 and Y drivers can skip that with the bumper posts. Model S and Model X drivers often can’t. The posts sit inside, so you need the mechanical release first.

On Model S, look in the front wheel wells. Pull loops sit behind access panels. On older cars, reach through the driver’s-side liner flap. Pull the yellow or orange loop. You may need two pulls: one for the primary latch, then the secondary.

On Model X, it’s the same wheel-well idea. The loop is usually orange. It sits just behind the front edge of the liner. Pull firmly, and the frunk should rise a little.

Tesla has moved these loops across years. If what you see doesn’t match, open the owner’s manual on your phone. Search your model year on Tesla’s support pages. Don’t force a cable that won’t move. A snapped release is a shop job, not a lot fix.

Clamp order, then give the computers a beat

Park the jump pack next to the nose. Confirm the pack is charged before you clip on.

  1. Open the 3 or Y bumper cover, or the S or X frunk.
  2. Clip the red clamp to the red terminal first, and seat it fully. A loose clamp can spark.
  3. Clip the black clamp to unpainted chassis metal. Use the dedicated ground at the tow-eye opening when you have one. Prefer a chassis ground over the battery’s negative post when both exist.
  4. Switch the pack on if it has a switch. Wait a short moment. The body computer needs to see voltage before it boots.
  5. Try the key card or the door handle. The screen should start to light.
  6. Once the car is awake, disconnect in reverse. Black clamp first, then red.
  7. Plug in, or keep the car awake, so the converter can recharge the 12-volt.

If the car is dead and locked, jumping is only half the job. Use the locked-out Tesla sequence with this clamp order.

After it wakes, get power back into the system

Waking the screens is the start, not the finish. If the traction pack still has range, drive to a charger or a home plug. Orange County has 48 Tesla Supercharger sites and 861 DC fast ports on that network. Tesla holds 59 percent of the county’s public DC fast ports. Huntington Beach has a Supercharger at 6913 Warner Avenue.

If the pack is actually empty, a 12-volt jump only restores control. Tesla’s roadside policy answers a depleted battery with transportation, not with charging at the car. Running out of charge isn’t treated as a financially covered service. Covered transport of up to 500 miles is for a warrantable breakdown. That breakdown has to leave the car undrivable. Tesla publishes the roadside number as 877-798-3752. Confirm the current policy on Tesla’s site before you assume coverage.

  • You can’t reach the bumper posts or the wheel-well loops. Bumper damage or a tight stall can block both.
