The pack reads zero on the 91 in North Orange County. You’re already on the shoulder. Orange County’s Freeway Service Patrol lists this freeway in its published coverage. A patrol truck still won’t charge an empty EV. Stay in the car with the hazards on. Then get a mobile 240-volt charge so you can roll to a stall.

FSP covers the 91, and still can’t charge you

This corridor sits in the published patrol program. Confirm the current beat map with OCTA. Hours weren’t listed in a form we could verify for this page. FSP can stop for a stalled car in the lane. It isn’t there to energize a high-voltage pack.

Tesla’s roadside policy answers a depleted battery with transportation. It doesn’t send a charge to the car. Tesla’s own help and freeway patrol leave you in the same place. You’re still empty, and you’re still on the 91.

West of the 57 isn’t the canyon

The 91 is one number on the sign. The drive isn’t one place.

West of the 57 you’re in Fullerton, Buena Park, and west Anaheim. The land is flatter. The 91 and I-5 junction sits in that Buena Park cluster. Exits come in a tight stack: Beach Boulevard, Brookhurst, Euclid, and Harbor. Theme-park traffic from Anaheim and Buena Park loads this stretch on weekends. Placentia sits just north of the freeway between Fullerton and Yorba Linda. Those commutes dump onto the 91 every weekday.

A Tesla Supercharger sits at 6940 Beach Blvd in Buena Park. Another sits at 8888 Knott Ave, also Buena Park. Fullerton has Tesla stalls at 1475 S Harbor Blvd. It also has 220 E Orangethorpe Ave. Anaheim has Tesla stalls at 1128 W Lincoln Ave. More sit at 1734 W Lincoln Ave and 2270 E Lincoln Ave. There’s another Anaheim site at 156 N Imperial Hwy, right off the Imperial interchange. Electrify America lists a Walmart site at 440 N Euclid St in Anaheim. That’s a useful pin if you’re not in a Tesla.

East of Imperial Highway the road is Santa Ana Canyon. Anaheim Hills and Yorba Linda sit on those grades. East of the 55, the 91 Express Lanes run toward the county line. Eastbound climbing uses more pack than a Harbor Boulevard crawl. Drivers who set their buffer on flat north-county streets feel that here. Heat inland of the 57 isn’t the coastal marine layer. The car’s estimate can drop faster than it did on the way to work.

There’s a Tesla site at 8148 E Santa Ana Canyon Rd in Anaheim. AFDC lists 20 stalls there, at 75 kW. Yorba Linda has Tesla stalls at 18210 to 18380 Yorba Linda Blvd. A second site sits at 18601 to 18659 Yorba Linda Blvd. AFDC lists eight stalls at each, at 250 kW. Those pins still don’t help if the car is already dead on the shoulder.

Don’t leave the lane to chase a stall at zero. Get enough range to exit, then charge properly. Packed Anaheim stalls are a separate problem. They don’t help a dead car in a live lane. Why this freeway sees so many empty packs

Orange County had 210,842 battery-electric cars on the road. That CEC count is as of December 31, 2025. Teslas were 138,121 of those, 65.51 percent of the county’s BEV fleet. ZEVs were 10.56 percent of Orange County’s light-duty fleet. The statewide share was 7.54 percent. The county holds 12.02 percent of California’s battery-electric vehicles. It’s 8.33 percent of the state’s light-duty fleet.

That mix shows up on the 91. Inland north-county commutes are long. The canyon stretch isn’t coastal-flat. Public charging is busy. The CEC count for December 31, 2025 is 7,095 public ports in Orange County. That’s 36.8 ZEVs per public port. Statewide the same math is 24.4. Orange County is worse served per EV than the state average.

AFDC shows 48 Tesla Supercharger sites in the county, and 861 DC fast ports. Tesla holds 59 percent of Orange County’s public DC fast ports. A Tesla driver on the 91 can assume a stall exists somewhere ahead. That assumption is how people roll past a safe exit at 8 percent. Then the canyon or the stack at Harbor finishes the pack.

Non-Tesla DC fast charging is real here too. Countywide, AFDC counts 175 non-Tesla DC fast stations and 591 ports. ChargePoint has many sites and few ports per site. Those are mostly dealership and office plugs, not a rescue from the shoulder. The Euclid Electrify America site is a finish stall. It isn’t something you hunt from a live lane. Get there after a mobile charge.

Stay on the shoulder until range is back

Pull as far right as the pavement allows. Hug the dirt edge or the wall. Turn the hazards on before you reach for the phone. If you must step out, use the passenger door. The driver’s door puts you in the lane.

Stay with the car. Don’t walk toward an exit to find a charger. An empty EV on the 91 is a traffic problem first. Range is second.

If you’re blocking a lane, or someone is hurt, call 911. For a standard shoulder stop, Caltrans 511 can log a stalled vehicle. CHP may still roll on you. If they want the car moved, say the pack is empty. Ask them to wait for a mobile charge if that’s safe. A tow is a last move, not the first. Out-of-charge recovery is the service built for this. Empty pack, dead 12V, or both

An EV at zero can look fully dead. Tesla’s Model Y owner’s manual describes the low-voltage battery losing support once range is exhausted. The car may need an external 12-volt supply first. Then the high-voltage pack can accept a charge. If the screens are dark, say that when you call. Fussy doors are the same clue. The operator may jump or replace the 12V on site, then charge the pack.

The independent operators we connect you with bring 240-volt Level 2 to the car. Teslas get a native NACS plug. Other brands use a CCS or J1772 adapter. Typical charging time is 15 to 30 minutes. That window is time on the plug, not time to arrival. Most empty-pack calls need about 10 to 20 miles of range. That’s enough to leave the 91 and finish at a stall.

What to tell the person who picks up

Give eastbound or westbound first. Then the last exit you passed. Beach Boulevard, Harbor, and Euclid read clearly. So do Imperial Highway, Weir Canyon, and Gypsum Canyon. A mile marker on a post is even better. Saying you’re near Anaheim wastes a round of questions.

Year, make, model, and color next. A 2019 Model 3 in white tells the operator which plug to stage. A 2024 Ioniq 5 in gray does the same for CCS.

Battery state third. Four percent with the car still awake is one job. A silent cabin and a dead 12V is another.

Say if CHP or FSP is already there. Say if you’re against a wall or in a gore point. A narrow shoulder east of Weir Canyon is worth mentioning too. The operator bills you. You’re allowed to hear the quote before they start.
