A Toyota bZ4X can sit overnight in an Orange County garage. By morning the car can look dead. You press Power and get nothing: no READY light, no chime. The fob may as well be a rock. That’s almost never an empty traction pack. The small 12V battery failed to wake the computers.

Orange County had 210,842 battery-electric vehicles as of December 31, 2025. That’s the California Energy Commission’s count. Teslas were 138,121 of them. That leaves 72,721 other BEVs, the bZ4X among them. They sit in attached garages and street parking from Irvine to Santa Ana. A dark dash in those spots is a 12V job first.

The pack can be fine while the car still won’t wake

The bZ4X uses two batteries, and they do different work. The high-voltage pack under the floor is what moves you. The 12V unit in the front bay runs locks, lights, and sensors. It also runs the computers that have to boot. Those computers connect the pack. If that small battery is dead, the traction pack is locked out. Last night’s range reading doesn’t matter. The gate is closed.

Toyota tops the 12V with a DC-to-DC converter once the car is awake. There’s no old-school alternator spinning at a stoplight. Parked and asleep, that converter sits idle. A small overnight drain can drop a tired lead-acid battery too low. The computers then lack the voltage they need. You come downstairs and the car acts empty.

The battery sits under a plastic cover on the driver’s side of the front bay. It’s a conventional lead-acid unit, not a lithium module. You can pull the cover and reach the posts. You don’t have to. Toyota put jump posts on that same side. You can wake the car without fighting the cover.

If the dash flashes high-voltage warnings and then goes dark, stop. That’s a different fault. It needs a dealer scan, not another set of cables.

Signs it’s the 12V, not the traction pack

Use the cabin as your first test. You’re looking for a car that won’t even pretend to boot.

  • Power does nothing. No dash, no ambient light, no screen.
  • The fob won’t unlock. You’re on the physical key.
  • Hazards stay dark. No lock clunk when you walk up.
  • Last night’s charge, or last night’s range reading, still looked normal.

The dash lights, but READY never appears. Jump anyway. A weak 12V can light the cluster and still fail to close the contactors. If READY stays off after a clean jump, you need a scan.

READY comes on, but it won’t leave Park. Press the brake firmly and try again. The interlock is picky. That’s not a pack problem.

Jump posts on the bZ4X, not a hunt under the cover

Positive is the red post under a hinged red cap. It sits toward the front of the driver’s-side bay. It’s marked with a plus. Negative isn’t the battery’s black post. Clip the black lead to an unpainted metal bracket or bolt on the body. Keep it away from the battery. Toyota put the ground there on purpose. Use that point.

Treat the posts like any other 12V jump. Use the same cables and the same polarity. Once voltage is back, the car decides whether READY can come up.

How to jump it at the garage or on the curb

Keep the donor car or jump pack off until the clamps are set.

Red clamp to the bZ4X positive post first. Other red clamp to the donor positive. Black clamp to the donor negative. Last black clamp to that chassis ground on the bZ4X. Don’t put it on the battery’s negative post. Wait two or three minutes so the computers can see a stable voltage. Foot on the brake. Press Power. You’re looking for READY.

A compact jump pack in the frunk makes this easier. Toyota doesn’t include one. A gas car in the next stall works too. The posts take ordinary jumper cables.

A night in an OC garage is the usual stranding

The typical bZ4X no-start here isn’t a remote trailhead. It’s the commute. The car sat in a closed garage in Irvine or Lake Forest. Or it sat on a driveway in Yorba Linda. Or it sat in a work structure in Tustin. You come down with keys and coffee. The fob does nothing.

Overnight drain is the story. A tired battery, a small parasitic load, and eight hours of sleep. The converter never ran because the car never woke. By morning the 12V is under the threshold the computers need.

The lot doesn’t change the first step. Katella-area parking in Anaheim. A structure off Bristol in Costa Mesa. A curb in Santa Ana. Street parking in Garden Grove. A lot near Warner in Huntington Beach. The 12V doesn’t care which stall you picked.

If you’re on the I-5, I-405, or 91 shoulder, stay with the car. Work the 12V there. Don’t walk the freeway looking for a plug. A bZ4X that can’t show READY also can’t take a charge. Orange County had 7,095 public charging ports on December 31, 2025. That’s the Energy Commission count. None of them boot a car whose 12V is dead.

Once READY is back and you actually have range, get the battery tested that week. Don’t nurse a weak 12V across SR-22 at the Crush. Don’t limp to Fashion Island and hope it holds.
