Skip the tow until you test the 12V. A Lexus RZ that won’t start is usually a silent 12V failure. The traction pack is often still fine. The dash stays dark and READY never comes on. The fob may not unlock the doors.
That failure shows up in the same Orange County structures every other EV dies in. Irvine office garages after a long day. Costa Mesa parking decks near the airport. Anaheim lots around the parks and the stadium. Tustin office parks when the workplace charger is a miss. The badge is Lexus. The 12V story is the same one Tesla and Hyundai owners already know here.
Orange County had 210,842 battery-electric vehicles on the road. That count is as of December 31, 2025. The California Energy Commission puts BEVs at 8.54% of the county’s light-duty fleet. All zero-emission vehicles together numbered 260,833, or 10.56%. A dark RZ is not a rare car in these garages. It’s one more BEV whose small battery quit first.
Dark screens mean the 12V, not the pack
Press Power and get nothing. No chime. No center display. No ambient lighting. That’s the 12V. If the fob ignores you, unfold the physical key blade. Open the door yourself. Hazard lights often stay dead too.
The traction pack can still be full. The RZ will not use it until the 12V wakes the computers. Those computers close the high-voltage contactors. No 12V means the pack stays locked, even at 70 percent. People assume they’re empty. They’re looking at the wrong battery.
If the dash does light, then shows a high-voltage warning and shuts down, stop jumping. That’s a different fault. It needs a dealer scan. For a car that’s fully black, stay on the 12V path. When the 12-volt dies on the road covers that split for every EV brand.
The RZ will not ready until the small battery does
Two batteries live in this crossover. The high-voltage pack turns the motors. The 12V lead-acid battery runs locks, lights, and the control units that enable the pack. The order is strict. Dead 12V, no READY, no drive, no charge.
A jump on the right posts can bring READY back in minutes. A sulfated battery may only hold that wake-up for a short trip. Get it load-tested once you’re off the street.
Lexus built the RZ on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform. The Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra share the same 12V startup logic. Under-hood jump posts and the READY sequence travel across all three. Still open your own manual. Lexus shifts cover layouts by year.
The parked RZ and a 12V that sits too low
This platform has a known pattern. The 12V can sit undercharged for long parked stretches. Lead-acid plates sulfate when they stay low. That capacity does not return. A fairly new RZ can still strand you.
A hardwired maintainer, a trickle tender, is the garage answer. It keeps the 12V topped while the car sits at home. It does not help on Katella, in a Costa Mesa structure, or on the I-405 shoulder.
Heat inland works the battery harder. Yorba Linda grades, east Anaheim, and inland north county bake a parked RZ more than a coastal garage in Huntington Beach or Newport Beach. Along the water, salt air is the other wear path. White or green crust on the posts is corrosion. Check those clamps yearly if you park outside near Seal Beach or the harbor towns.
Central county has its own version of the same stall. Santa Ana work lots. Garden Grove mall decks. Fullerton campus parking after class. The RZ sits dark in those structures the same way a Tesla or a Hyundai does. If the car has been slow to wake, treat that as a warning. Load-test the 12V before it leaves you dark.
Jump posts under the hood, not at the battery clamp
The 12V and the dedicated jump terminals sit in the front compartment. Plastic covers hide them. Lexus wants you on a labeled positive jump post, not the battery terminal. You do not unpack the whole tray for a roadside wake-up.
Match the cover to your model-year owner’s manual before you clamp.
On the positive side, open the hood. Pull the engine covers and the fuse box cover. Lift the jump-start terminal cover. The red clamp goes on that exposed post.
On the ground side, do not use the battery’s negative terminal. Find unpainted metal on the chassis or structure, away from the jump post. The black clamp goes there. That keeps a spark off the battery.
Set the clamps before you add power. Keep the donor vehicle or jump pack off while you work. Red to the RZ positive post, then red to the donor positive. Black to the donor negative, then black to the RZ ground point. Pause two to three minutes so the RZ can sense voltage. Foot on the brake, press Power, watch for READY.
READY plus a 12V warning means the cell woke and it’s already failing. Do not shrug that off. Your EV 12V replacement guide covers the shop visit. Clamp order for any electric car is in how to jump start an EV on site.
Read the symptoms before you pick a tow
| What you see | Likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Screens dark, fob dead | Failed 12V | Jump the under-hood positive post |
| Dash lights, READY stays off | Weak 12V or high-voltage fault | Jump first. Scan if READY still stays off |
| READY on, car will not roll | Brake switch or Park interlock | Press the brake firmly, retry from Park |
| Charged overnight, dead at dawn | 12V drain while parked | Load-test. Add a maintainer if it sits |
| Fine on arrival, then a blackout | Loose or corroded 12V posts | Inspect and clean the terminals |
Operators see that same grid on Teslas, Cadillacs, and Hyundais in these lots. The RZ is not a unique puzzle. It’s the county’s standard 12V failure, with a Lexus cover on it. A flatbed is the last move, not the first. The car is often a jump away from driving to a shop.
A woke RZ still needs a CCS plug, not a Supercharger
Charging usually will not start while the 12V is dead. The port, the onboard charger, and the contactors all ride that low-voltage bus. Revive the 12V. Then the RZ can take a plug.
The RZ uses CCS, not Tesla’s native NACS. Most Tesla Superchargers in Orange County will not serve it. AFDC lists one Magic Dock site at 24372 Rockfield Blvd in Lake Forest. That site has CCS1 and NACS. It’s the Tesla exception for a Lexus plug.
For a CCS fill after the jump, use the non-Tesla DC fast map. AFDC counts 175 non-Tesla DC fast stations in the county, and 591 ports. Electrify America at Fashion Island, 401 Newport Center Dr in Newport Beach, has 8 DC fast ports. Electrify America at Walmart, 440 N Euclid St in Anaheim, has 10. Electrify America at 25825 Las Vegas in Capistrano Beach, Dana Point, has 12. That’s the largest non-Tesla site in south county. EVgo at Plaza Antonio, 22351 Antonio Pkwy in Rancho Santa Margarita, has 14. EVgo at 801 Pacific Coast Hwy in Seal Beach has 4.
Do not nurse a fading 12V across town to reach a stall. If the jump barely holds, stay where you are. A weak cell can drop again on I-5 south of Irvine, or on SR-22 at the Crush.
The CEC counted 7,095 public charging ports in Orange County as of December 31, 2025. That’s 36.8 ZEVs per public port, against 24.4 statewide. Ports exist in Irvine, Tustin, Santa Ana, and Anaheim. A car that will not wake cannot use any of them.
Stay with the car, then decide jump, charge, or shop
Look in the frunk for a jump pack. Lexus does not ship one. A compact lithium pack belongs there. If you have it, use the clamp order above.
No pack? Any 12V vehicle can donate. Gas or electric. Ordinary jumper cables fit the RZ post. A neighbor in an Irvine garage can do it. So can a driver who stops on the shoulder of I-405.
South county has the same 12V blackout in different lots. San Clemente beach parking. Mission Viejo shopping decks. Laguna Hills stalls near Cabot and Moulton. North county repeats it at Fullerton Harbor lots and Buena Park auto row. The check is identical. Dark screens, then the under-hood post.
If READY will not stay, or new faults pop up, do not keep driving. Get help at the car. Charge Pro OC is a referral line. It matches stranded EV drivers with independent local mobile rescue operators. It owns no trucks and employs no technicians. The operator quotes you before work starts and bills you directly.
Those operators jump or replace a dead 12V on site. They can also roll a 240V Level 2 source to the car. Native NACS, or a CCS or J1772 adapter for an RZ. That session typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That figure is charging time. It is not an arrival time.
They handle Tesla and every major EV brand, Lexus included. Start with non-Tesla EV rescue if you want that path. Or use the Orange County EV charging hub for city pages. Irvine workplace garages and Costa Mesa structures are common RZ settings. The operator comes to the stall. You do not hunt a charger in the dark.
Tesla still dominates the county BEV fleet. CEC make data for December 31, 2025 shows 138,121 Teslas. That’s 65.51% of Orange County battery-electrics. The other third is everyone else, including Lexus. Superchargers cluster in Irvine, Tustin, Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana. None of that density wakes a dark RZ. The 12V has to come back first.
Frequently asked questions
How do you jump a Lexus RZ?
Open the hood. Remove the engine and fuse box covers. Lift the dedicated positive jump-start cover. Clamp red to that post. Clamp black to unpainted chassis metal, not the battery negative. Wait two to three minutes. Press Power with your foot on the brake. READY should appear. Confirm the post in your model-year manual before you start.
Why is there no READY light on my Lexus RZ?
A depleted 12V auxiliary battery is the usual cause. The RZ cannot engage the traction system until that small battery powers the computers. A full pack still sits locked. Jump the 12V first. If READY stays off after a clean jump, you may have a high-voltage fault. That one belongs at a dealer scan.
Can the RZ charge while the 12V is dead?
Usually not. Charging needs the same low-voltage systems that boot the car. Revive or replace the 12V first. Then the RZ can take a home outlet, a public CCS stall, or a mobile 240V charge from the operator at the curb.
If the RZ is dark in an Irvine garage, a Huntington Beach lot, or a driveway in Orange, stay with it. Call Charge Pro OC at (949) 444-0151. The operator who takes the job will quote a 12V jump or a range top-up before they start.
